Compostable Packaging: Key Actions
Audit your packaging

• Identify whether composability is mandatory, optional, or prohibited for each packaging
format.
• Ensure compostable packaging is used only where biowaste collection exists and is
appropriate, and not as a substitute for recyclable formats.
Ensure Full Compliance
with EN 13432 Industrial
Composability
• All compostable packaging under EN 13432 standards must fully biodegrade in an industrial
composting environment, leave no toxic residues & disintegrate within permitted timeframes
Review labelling and
marketing claims
• Ensure composability claims are precise, substantiated, and compliant. Packaging must be
clearly identified as industrially compostable, with instructions not to place it in recycling.
• Implement Harmonised EU labels once finalised. See slide 11 for more details.

Systems
• Ensure packaging is compatible with industrial composting infrastructure. Use suitable
mono-materials like cellulose paper, wood pulp or biopolymers (PLA). Choose water-based
inks, adhesives & coatings and avoid plastics or PFA9s.
